A scalable CPQ system that streamlines complex configurations and accelerates decision making.

CLIENT: Honeywell Building Solutions
PROJECT: SAP CPQ Software Solution
DATE: Jan. 2023 — Nov. 2024
SKILLS: Interface design, prototyping, design systems
the challenge
Honeywell Building Solutions needed to replace its CPQ solution on an accelerated timeline
They contracted Boston Harbor Consulting to achieve this feat, and I was hired on as a full-time UI Designer to support the team in January 2023. My role was designing user interface screens based on business requirements from the client, visualizing system architecture before development, and delivering interface mockups rapidly.
the outcome
My prototypes streamlined iteration cycles and enhanced cross-functional communication
Over 3 project phases, my prototype and design system significantly streamlined iteration cycles, enabling design updates within hours rather than days and helping the team meet critical sprint milestones. It enhanced team confidence by providing a source of truth, reducing uncertainty in decision-making, and strengthening cross-functional collaboration between the business analysts, the solution architect, the designer (me), and the developers. We were able to successfully ship multiple MVP iterations of the system over 2 years and meet Honeywell's requirements.

project overview
The HBS Project spanned over two years, including 3 Agile phases and 2 MVPs which I helped shipped to go live
This role was my first experience operating within a cross-functional team and following Agile workflows. I had the pleasure of joining during the project kickoff and helping all the way through the advanced prototyping of phase 3, after which I stepped down from my full-time role to return to school, but continued to support design iteration part-time.
process
From replication to ideation
Initially, my task was to recreate interface screens from one of BHC's previous, successful solutions and repurpose it for Honeywell. However, as the project grew more advanced and I became more skilled, I began to design layouts for myself, introducing more advanced navigational components and UI features to better address HBS's business requirements.

skill building
I made myself a Figma expert capable of building anything in high fidelity
Starting out in the project, I was a beginner and Figma, but rapidly improved and taught myself the ins and outs of the program to not only improve my workflow and produce hi-fi screens rapidly but impress the team with functionality and accuracy. Consulting work gets chaotic and messy quickly, and if I was responsible for providing clarity at all times, I needed to be on top of my game.
experimentation
I created a dark mode feature for the entire prototype using Variable Modes in Figma
Driven by a fascination with Figma's newest features, I created a dark mode using variable modes and experimented with possible future iterations Honeywell may be interested in.

making my mark
I initiated redesigning BHC's logo to be more modern and abstract
With a background in graphic design, I wanted to showcase my skills to the company and initiated redesigning their old logo to fit better in the modern industry.

how was ai used?
ChatGPT helped me understand complex industry-specific language
I primarily utilized ChatGPT to help me understand complicated terminology or systems questions related to SAP, CPQ, and Salesforce functionalities. Additionally, I used it to help me spellcheck a multi-page guidebook created by my team who were mostly non-native English speakers.
